Access to the Star’s newspaper archives is available free through most university and Canadian public library systems that subscribe to the ProQuest newspaper archival database. Please contact your local library for more information. If your local library doesn’t subscribe to ProQuest, ask them to add it as it includes the Star. For Permissions or licensing of TORONTO STAR PRINT/DIGITAL ARTICLES & PUBLISHED PAGE REPRODUCTIONS:

All articles, published pages, headlines and excerpts from the Toronto Star, including logo and branding, are licensed through TSS and PARS International Corp. This includes use in TV shows, books, films, gallery exhibits, educational projects and other publications, including digital. A quote based on specific usage can be obtained from www.parsintl.com/permissions or www.torontostarreprints.com. PARS International Corp. also produces plaques, posters and hardcopy reprints of the Toronto Star.

For STAR PHOTOGRAPHS:

All Toronto Star staff photographs that are copyrighted must be licensed exclusively through Getty Images. Anyone requesting Star photos should first search on the Getty site at www.gettyimages.ca/collections/toronto-star or contact them directly at sales.na@gettyimages.com. If the photo is there, license through Getty.

  • If the Star photo is not on Getty, please contact syndicate@torstar.com.
  • For freelancer photos, the photographer should be contacted directly to license.
  • For third-party wire service photos, such as Canadian Press, Reuters, Associated Press, Bloomberg, they must be licensed through the appropriate originating wire service.
  • Glossy reprints of published Star photos are no longer sold to the public.

For TORONTO STAR ARCHIVAL PHOTOS:
The Star donated a large number of glossy photos from the Star editorial library to the Toronto Public Library. TPL owns the originals and can provide permissions and digital copies to the public for personal non-commercial use in print. The Star retains copyright on all Star images, so all commercial uses must be authorized and licensed by TSS.

For any commercial licensing requests for Star archival photos, including Star photos held by TPL, search for the images on Getty first and license through them.  www.gettyimages.ca/collections/toronto-star.

If a Star photo on the TPL website cannot be found on Getty, contact syndicate@torstar.com with the details on the image you wish to license.

For ALL PHOTOS & ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN METROLAND PUBLICATIONS & WEBSITES including the Hamilton Spectator, the Waterloo Regional Record, the Niagara Falls Review, the Welland Tribune, the St. Catharines Standard, the Peterborough Examiner plus any of our 70+ community newspapers, can be licensed through TSS directly. Please provide links and examples of the published material you wish to license along with the planned uses.

All authorized licensed material requires a signed agreement either through Getty, PARS or TSS.
